Round 1 of the 3D Hoops Summer League took place last night with a lot of exciting basketball action. Featured below is a recap of all you need to know about last night’s summer league action!
4 on 4 Game of the Night: Starting at 6:00 on Monday we had a great matchup between the White and Orange teams. Coach Jason Harman came out of retirement tonight to coach the White team, but would it be enough to beat the three headed offensive attack of Cal Stevenson, Matthew Epting, and Jaden Gainey? Early on the Orange team had a commanding 10-2 lead, but halfway through the 1st half Coach Harman called a timeout to rally his players and it sure did help. The balanced offensive attack from the White team starters; Cavanaugh Brasington, Luke Swearingen, Jonah Buriss, and Stephan Jones, tied up the game 12-12 at halftime. From then on we had a back and forth game where no team could gain any ground, until Cal Stevenson hit a deep 2 point shot and was fouled. He hit the free throw to bring the Orange team ahead 21-18 with just 22 seconds left in the game. But Jonah Buriss was determined to get his team the win and was able to drive the lane twice to give the White team the win 22-21.
7:00- Grey vs. White: We had the not just the best game of the 5-on-5 League, but one of the best basketball games anyone has ever seen last night. Could a 38 point explosion from Dylan Little beat the Mason Carver led White team? Early on Mason Carver and Donny Chiarel were dominating from inside the paint and from three point range. They combined for 14 in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter the White team was ahead 16-14, but Mason Carver took over in the second quarter to put the White team ahead 32-18. Not many points were scored during the third quarter after some defensive adjustments were made by Grey team Coach Chris Proctor. But late in the 4th after trailing by 18, Dylan Little caught fire and tied up the game at 52 with a last second drive to the basket to take the game into overtime. Early in the overtime period Donny Chiarel made his post presence known when Mason Carver got into foul trouble and he scored 4 points to put the White team up 57-52. With just 1 second left in the game Dylan Little hit a deep three to put his team only down by two. On the ensuing inbound pass Forrest Alvarez stole the ball from the White team and threw up desperation half-court shot that just fell short. The final to this game was 57-55 in favor of the White team.
8:15- Orange vs. Blue: The Blue team, without their leading scorer Davis King, took on the number 1 seeded Orange team in our second 5-on-5 semifinal game of the night. Early on a combined attack from Orange team’s Mitchell McGee and Max Holland, were going shot for shot with the blue teams Myles Dailey and Stephan Jones. With the score at the end of the first quarter being 16-13 in favor of the Orange team. But a consistent offensive attack and a very stingy defense from Coach Bouknight’s Orange team proved to be too much as they were able to slowly wear down the Blue team. Even when they were down by a lot the Blue team never gave up with great late scoring from Myles Dailey, Jonah Buriss, Stephan Jones, and Reece Fields. The Orange team won this game 64-39 and will move onto the Summer League 5-on-5 Division Championship against the White team.
